Menominee

Mamaceqtaw Keyboards are available

Note: There are several Roman Orthography conventions on this site that may require further explanation. On the charts below, there is lots of phonetic terminology that may not be familiar to everyone.

The United States Census counts 152 Menominee speakers, however Monica Macaulay at the University of Wisconsin reports only 36 first language speakers out of 7,000 total members of the Menominee nation.

Notes

  • The affricate ‹c› is palato-alveolar [ʧ], the ‹y› is palatal [j].  Long vowels are marked with a macron: e.g. ‹ī›.  The digraph ‹ae› should not be confused with ‹æ›, the joined form ‹æ› is not correct.
