Dakelh (Carrier) Text

This Dakelh example was taken from a text called Musd̲z̲i ’Udada’. The story was published in the Modern Roman Orthography, and I have transcribed into syllabics. The syllabics version here does not mark glottal stops at the beginnings of words, tone, or the underlined consonants (except as finals). There is no means in the traditional Syllabics system to mark the latter two.

Unlike the original text, I have used the guillemets « and » instead of quotation marks in the Roman, so as not to confuse the punctuation with the glottal stop symbol ’.

Please note that the following characters may not display properly, as they have not been included in Unicode yet: The syllabics versions of /s̲/ and /’/. (See Syllabarium). Also, Unicode by default places all finals at the top-line, where the Dakelh texts I’ve seen typically place them mid-line. Languagegeek.com Dakelh fonts use mid-line finals.

You can also see another Roman orthography text online, The Name – Nak’azdli as told by Louis-Billy Prince.)
