Nuučaan̓uł Text

Below are the first two paragraphs of a narration which can be found at the beginning of a collection of texts compiled by Edward Sapir and Morris Swadesh. Modern Nuučaan̓uł orthography follows quite closely to that found in the text. The differences: Sapir’s λ χ ʜ ‘ are ƛ x̣ ḥ ʕ respectively in the current alphabet. The second version of the text below is in the orthography proposed by Randy Bouchard and presented in Ellis and Swan 1981. Bouchard’s orthography follows the common system he has proposed for many British Columbia languages, but I have not seen it used with any Nuučaan̓uł texts, nor on any websites. As the Tseshaht Nation webpage uses the first writing system, I assume it is a standard.
